There will be times in our lives that a situation will occur that we need to be out of town or even out of the country for an extended period of time; a military deployment, a religious mission or extended vacation are some of the few examples. This can create a bit of strain and anxiety within you when you think of all the things you do from day to day, week to week or even month to month. You ask yourself, “How can I handle all this before I leave?” and “What about my storage unit while I’m gone?”
Getting your things together can be very overwhelming, but don’t you worry! It is better to prepare before you go away and we have some ideas to help you out. From our tips we can help you make your storage unit one less thing you would have to worry about.
Check On Your Storage Unit Before You Leave.
Our suggestion is that you check on your storage unit several times a year. You can check on your things while the seasons change. Check on your valuables at least four times a year. Even if you were just there a month ago you should check on your unit before you head out. It is better to make sure all is good since you will not be able to be checking on your belongings for a while:
- Things to check for is sagging, crushing and mildew on boxes and if needed replacement. If you are storing your things in those free grocery store boxes chances are they will break because they are not meant for storing for long periods of time. You should replace them with high quality boxes which we have available for you in our rental office. These boxes are specially made for storing for long periods of time, sagging, crushing and mildew.
- Check for broken or damaged items. If you have a stack of boxes or something that can fall over and break into other things make sure you can remove and dispose of those broken things. Re-stack and organize your storage unit to prevent that from happening again.
- If you will be away during the hot summer months, consider adding something like DampRid® to help pull the excess moisture out of the air and prevent mildew and mold build up.
Set Payment Reminders.
If making payments are not easy from where you are going to be set a reminder on your phone for the first of the month and set it as a recurring reminder. You can call your property manager, or go online and make a payment.
You can also mail in your payment. Send it in a week or four weeks in advance from where ever you are as long as the property manager gets it before the fifth so you don’t get stuck with a late fee. One thing you do not want while you’re away is a late fee.
Many of our customers have their payment taken automatically on the first of the month from their bank account or charged to their credit card. You can set this up directly through your bank, as most banks if not all of them, offer this feature these days. Or, you can set up the automatic payment option through your online account, and it will charge your credit or debit card on the first of the month. If you set up automatic payments this way, it will continue until you turn them off. If doing this online is not your thing, you can also visit the rental office and set up automatic payments with the property manager. Automatic payments are a great way to ensure your rent is paid on time, no matter where you are in the world.
Pay Several Months In Advance.
Let’s say you are going to be gone for three months you can pay for those three months in advance. You can bring your payment to the rental office or mail it in with the number of months you are paying for in advance. Another option is paying it online; by doing so you won’t have to worry about it while you are away.
What if you are away longer then intended? You already paid for your future payments to avoid late fees, to avoid this from happening it is best to pay another month or two added just to be safe in case of a delayed flight, flight cancellation, or a sudden or unexpected change.
By following these simple tips, you can rest assured that your storage rent will be handled and your belongings will be safe and secure while you are away. So go ahead and plan that trip or set sail on your adventure, and don’t worry about a thing!
