It is time that you no longer need the use of your storage unit. Just as there are great tips on moving into your unit, there is a proper method to follow when moving out.
Upon renting your storage unit, the general rule is the property manager will review and explain the vacating policy to you. That information is also in your rental agreement details. If you are pressed for time and cannot get to your rental agreement easily, here are some simple steps explaining the vacate policy:
Self storage businesses require written notification of your intent to vacate anywhere from 7 to 30 days before the end of your rental terms, or typically the end of the month. At 140 Mini storage, we require 7 days written notice when you plan to vacate.
For example, you want to vacation on the 30th, your written notice is due by or before the 23rd.
There are some exceptions to the rule, however. The owner of the property has the right to give shorter notice of vacancy for various reasons, including:
- Any illegal activity performed in the storage unit or on the property at any time
- If the unit becomes infested with pests.
- If the occupant is known to be residing in the unit.
Most storage companies only pro-rate rent upon move in, and not upon vacating. For example, if your rent is due the 1st of the month and you are moving out the 15th of that month; will you be required to pay for the full month? The answer is yes at 140 Mini Storage, as that is our policy. However, your property manager will be able to answer that question for you, so simply ask!
Most self storage facilities require all property be removed from the storage unit at time of vacating. If there are items you do not want to take with you, do not just leave them in your unit. Your property manager will likely know of local places that take donations, or companies who specifically clean out units and unwanted items for a fee. Please note that if property is left in your storage unit upon vacating, your account will not be closed and clean out charges will likely be applied.
Leave It the Way You Found It:
If your storage unit was neatly swept and clean upon your move in (which should be the case), the general rule is to give it a sweep before you move out and throw out any trash. Many facilities include this in your rental agreement as a requirement.
